Unlearning Ableism: Creating New Knowledges, Nurturing Self-Advocacy

An insightful session led by Zahra, a Black woman living with disabilities who has successfully navigated postsecondary education while embracing multiple intersectional identities. 
Participants learned how to: 

  • Challenge and rethink ableist practices 

  • Explore new and empowering ways to create change 

  • Gain critical self-advocacy skills to thrive in various contexts

ACT Now! 2nd Mental Health National Conference,  Small Circle Facilitator

Zahra was one of the small group, circle facilitators of Black Mental Health and Wellness 2nd Annual ACT NOW! National Conference 2024” from March 20-22, 2024. It was a 3-day event. Her circle group was on March 21, 2024 and it was called "Intersectionality of Black Mental Health".

 

She shared her mental health crises, coming out as a lesbian, and advising powerful tools she used to get through. She shared of the important of acknowledging, valuing and validating mental health without shame in the black community and families. Embracing hard times to understand our suffering to be better human beings.​​​

Postsecondary Transitioning for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

Zahra created 45 minutes video presentation course for the Supporting Success for Children with Hearing Loss agency in the Florida, US.

 

The power of teachers to change the trajectory of students can be profound. This is a short account of Zahra’s transition from high school to college, the obstacles she faced, and the success she finally found. Drawing upon strength she didn’t know she had, she advocated for the services she needed to finish her degree. Zahra offers advice to teachers and students using her experience.

United Voices: Understanding the Intersectionality of the Black and Disability Community in Harmony

Zahra Brown was one of the guest speakers for United Voices: Understanding the Intersectionality of the Black and Disability Community in Harmony.  She shares her perspective on  the difference between discrimination against people with disabilities and ableism by sharing her story and her way of resisting racism, ableism and audism.

Zahra was one of the guest speakers of evening of entertainment, education, a live auction, delicious food, refreshing drinks, vibrant music, dancing, and great company.

 

Zahra shares her lived experience of dealing with the intersectionality of being black, disabled, hard of hearing and the impact of fighting against ableism, racism and audism.

Applying a Disability Justice Lens to Transform Work and Workplaces

TNLIP partnered with the Toronto Neighbourhood Centres and the Ontario Nonprofit Network to put together a wonderful speaker panel event exploring how organizations can apply Disability Justice Principles to the design of workplace environments and the delivery of services and programming.

 

The learning session laid a foundational understanding of the AODA landscape, envisioned the intersection of disability justice and decent work, and built our capacity to reimagine concrete ways to transform our work and workplaces.

 

The session was attended by more than 70 participants interested in the intersections of Disability Justice, Decent Work and Universal Design principles and featured disability advocates Zahra Brown, Rabia Khedr and Ingrid Palmer, and Yami Msosa as moderator.
